Where we as Brits can already be happy with a sunny day and a clear sky with stars in the sky, people in New Zealand are provided with nightly light shows. They could watch a first class breathtaking light shows last weekend. The Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights, was colored by pink, yellow and green tones. This yielded a lot of beautiful scenes and images that show us once again why we all have Instagram on our phone.

The northern and southern lights are exactly the same. Both aris through a solar wind of electrons and protons. The magnetic field of the earth bends it down and passes them to the North and South Pole. Altough the phenomenon has been presented several times, it remains special to see it in Down Under, where Australia is a lot higher than Antarctica.

What a hectic few days it's been. 3 auroras in 4 days, talking to a bunch of news agencies and getting my timelapse played on a few of them. To top it off just got back from a little mission up to Milford Sound. This shot is from Butchers Dam in Alexandra and it was just as the second wave of aurora activity started to go crazy. Visible pillars of light dancing accross the sky, a night I will never forget! ————————————– #aurora #nzmustdo #southernlights #queenstownlive #queenstownholidays #destinationnz #amazing_longexpo #longexpoelite #universetoday #uniladadventure #dream_image #amazing_longexpo #igpodium #ourplanetdaily #bestnatureshot #main_vision #places_wow #special_shots #master_shots #superhubs #bestvacations #nature_perfection #awesome_photographers #awesome_earthpix #fantastic_earthpix #awesomeglobe #superhubs #splendid_earth @bbcearth @universetoday @uniladadventure @purenewzealand

I've just had an absolutely amazing weekend traveling through the South Island. My goal was to take photos of the autumn colours around Central Otago (which I did and you'll be seeing a lot of those to come) but I also saw something far more special, twice! It's been over a decade since I saw my first and only view of the Southern Lights and I'd never been able to capture it until now, so I'm absolutely ecstatic that I got to capture this beautiful sight on both nights of my travel with clear skys. This shot was taken last night on the banks of Ruataniwha near Twizel, I'll be posting my shot from Saturday night which was even bigger later this week so keep your eyes open for that one.⠀ ⠀ Shot with Nikon D810 and Nikor 16-35⠀ ⠀ #aurora⠀ #southernlights⠀ #auroraaustralis⠀ #astro⠀ #astrophotography⠀ #TravelLikeALocalNZ⠀ #beautifulnz⠀ #tourismnz⠀ #wonderlustnz⠀ #wanderlustofnz⠀ #discover_newzealand⠀ #nzimagery⠀ #newzealand⠀ #worlds_eyes⠀ #nztravelreview⠀ #newzealandguide⠀ #destinationnz⠀ #thisisnz⠀ #newzealandvacations⠀ #bestnewzealand⠀ #love_new_zealand⠀ #gonz⠀ #pictureperfectnz⠀ #kiwipics⠀ #newzealandfinds⠀ #newnewzealand⠀ #travelphotographer⠀ #way2ill⠀ #thegreatoutdoors⠀ #liveoutdoors
